About the Course:
This course examines the multiple facets of the origin, onset and progression of unhealthy conditions throughout human life. The class begins by establishing the foundational concept of health in all of its interpretations. Having discussed what it means to be healthy, the course moves through a series of theories regarding the origin of disease.

Course Objectives:
1. Compare several major definitions of health and disease
2. Distinguish between illness, disease and disability
3. Differentiate physical from psychological disability
4. Describe Germ Theory, Psychosocial, Homeostasis and Neuroimmune theories
5. Discuss the role of genetic mutation and inflammation in the disease continuum
6. Compare leading causes of death in modern America to 100 years ago
7. List cultural and life style factors which affect probability of disease
8. Discuss the pathology implications of tobacco, substance abuse and obesity
9. Describe the health consequences of long term stress
10. List popular medical management strategies
11. Discuss the value of stress reduction and exercise in health maintenance

About the Author:
Jim began his career in health and wellness in 1992. He was first certified in Massage Therapy over 20 years ago. In his career, he has worked with a spectrum of clients in community, athletic and rehabilitative settings. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a Corrective Exercise Specialist, holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science and a Post Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitative Science. He is licensed for massage therapy in NJ, where he maintains a practice in corrective exercise and bodywork. Jim has been a college instructor for 7 years and has constructed programs in Exercise Science and Massage Therapy for Cumberland County Colleges. Additionally, he teaches in the Health and Exercise Department of Rowan University. He is an approved provider by the NCBTMB. An engaging and energetic instructor, Jim is pleased to make his return to Home CEU Connection and looks forward future collaborations.
