Managing Respiratory Issues of Medically Fragile Children (5)
Summary:
This presentation will help pulmonologists and respiratory therapists to focus on the medical issues of medically fragile children. The technology-dependent child is at special risk for respiratory complications of gastroesophageal and oral complications of neuromuscular disease, cerebral palsy, metabolic disease, complications of meningitis and other devastating illnesses. Airway clearance is an adjunct to decreasing costs and improving quality of life for these patients and their caregivers.
Objectives:
1. Provide an overview of neuromuscular diseases and complications that predispose patients to frequent respiratory exacerbations.
2. Identify treatment strategies/medically appropriate care to meet needs of this difficult patient population to promote improvements in quality of life and positive clinical outcomes.
3. Discuss evidence supporting the effect of airway clearance on reducing costs associated with pulmonary complications/exacerbations.
