Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists Names Jessica Schmidt President-Elect of the Board of Directors; Steve Marquis Begins Term as Treasurer; Two New Board Members Elected

The Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) has named Jessica Schmidt, MA, RPSGT, president-elect of the board of directors. Her two-year term as President will begin in January 2018. Schmidt has been a member of the BRPT Board since 2014 serving as Treasurer and chair of the Legislative Committee. Schmidt is currently a senior administrator at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC, where she oversees pulmonary, critical care, sleep medicine and cardiac procedures.

"Jessica has been an extremely effective member of the sleep community for more than a decade," said BRPT president Daniel Lane, BS, RPSGT, CCSH. "She was director of the first CAAHEP-accredited Polysomnography program in the Mid-Atlantic, she continues to serve on the advisory board of two CoA-PSG programs and is a founding member and past-president of the Maryland Sleep Society."

The change in Board leadership takes effect this month, but an official installation will take place at a BRPT Board meeting in Dallas, TX on February 25, 2017. For more information, visit

Free Lung Clinic Helps Asthma Patients Breathe Easier

Per capita, Osceola County has the worst rates in Florida for asthma hospitalizations and the second worst rate for emergency room visits for asthma. Ed Fluker is a respiratory therapist who founded a free lung clinic at Florida Hospital in Orlando after seeing patients come into his ER, get a breathing treatment and steroids and be sent out the door.

"Honestly we'll have patients who might have been seen in the ER 19 or 20 times prior to the clinic visit, and then after that, maybe once or twice in the next year," Fluker said.

According to Abe Aboraya of Health News Florida, "Fluker sees a need for the clinics because of the distance his patients travel to get free care. And he knows for every person able to make the trip, there are many more who can't."
