Cleaning Your Home Devices

Regardless of your home healthcare device, hygiene is paramount.

In July, ADVANCE published a cover story dealing with ventilator-associated events (VAEs), as well as healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). One of the more disconcerting facts that article brought to light was the fact that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), "5-10% of mechanically ventilated patients in the hospital ICU develop VAEs."

And while hospitals are unique environments, where infectious bacteria converge and have more of an opportunity to spread (to vulnerable, compromised patients), invasive homecare devices such as oxygen therapy, ventilators or even continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks can pose risks in the event that they are not kept clean and sterilized.

This patient handout summarizes methods of keeping these devices clean and even how to setup a schedule conducive to keeping them as sterile as possible.
