There may be no place like home, but that doesn't stop the staff at the Wanaque Center in Haskell, N.J., from trying to provide some familiar comforts for patients in the pediatric ventilator unit. It takes a special kind of health care professional to work with medically complex children who require long-term care - it's part big heart and part tough skin.
In the office of Wanaque's Director of Respiratory Care, Ed Peters, RRT, the calming sounds of water emanating from the fish tank contrast with the din of the unit and its complex medical equipment just outside his door. Peters, who first established the facility's pediatric ventilator unit 19 years ago, spoke with us about putting together a strong, supportive team and overcoming staffing challenges.
